PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and noncommercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names The Slip as its December Artist To Watch. Host Michaela Majoun will present the first of the month’s on-air segments on Thursday morning November 30th in the 9 a.m. hour. Majoun will also present The Slip on the “My Morning Download” feature, which can be accessed at www.XPoNentialmusic.org.
The Slip, a contemporary avant-rock trio, formed when bassist Marc Friedman and brothers Andrew and Brad Barr (drums and guitar/vocal, respectively) moved to Boston together after graduating from high school. Throughout the next decade The Slip grew from young, earthy avant-gardes to strong, dynamic rock composers, creating a new sonic landscape that drew equally from CAN, U2, and new interests like Built to Spill, Flaming Lips, and Wilco.
“For the last ten years, The Slip have been building up their fan base and for good reason – they're players of incredible versatility and talent,” said Bruce Warren, assistant general manager of programming for WXPN. “They can go from jazz to jams to indie rock and arena-ready power rock in seconds and make it all sound so natural.”
Dan Reed, music director for WXPN, adds, “The Slip’s new album Eisenhower is absolutely their most coherent and includes some excellent songs like ‘Children Of December,’ and `If One Of Us Should Fall.’ This band has been way under our radar but amazingly very much in the public eye; with Eisenhower they've made an album that combines their stellar musicianship with fantastic songs to match."
The Slip will kick off their month as the XPN Artist To Watch with a special performance. The band will play a WXPN Free At Noon Concert on Friday, December 1st at the Electric Factory (421 S. 7th Street, Philadelphia). Listeners can sign up to see the show live at www.xpn.org, or can listen live on 88.5 WXPN, and on line at www.xpn.org and www.NPR.org/music.
