WXPN Response to the Local Impact of COVID-19
Music Community Relief Initiative
WXPN is committed to the viability and sustainability of the independent music ecosystem of artists, venues, and related workers. As concerts and music gatherings across the country were shut down in March, we took steps to support the community including (links):
Virtual Concert Calendar informing audiences of upcoming live, online performances
“Checking In With…” series where we touch base our musical family to see how they’re holding up during the quarantine, and the music that has kept them grounded
REC Philly Membership Awards, providing five local artists with free, one-year memberships to WXPN partner REC Philly, so they can access REC Philly’s new state-of-the-art creative facility and many creative programs
“Quarantunes” Spotify playlists curated by WXPN DJs designed for getting us through this difficult time together
Additionally, WXPN Kids Corner is supporting families during this time by opening up the phone lines for kids to share their feelings and connecting parents to tools for home-based education. They’ve provided a forum for kids to connect via a Rainbow Hunt photo gallery and are holding a virtual Science Fair.
We continue to listen and are planning to rollout additional programs in the coming weeks.
WXPN Music Community Relief Fund
Though the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented and intensely challenging, thanks to the dedicated financial support of WXPN members, our nonprofit public service continues to thrive for all music lovers. We were built for this. Never has the power of shared music listening to connect over distances been more evident. Never has the need for music to comfort and uplift been more appreciated. Never has a home for the local music community to convene for support been more vital. WXPN is here for you.
Above and beyond the free programming, music news, and interviews provided on-air and online every day, WXPN is stepping up to address the current crisis by establishing the WXPN Music Community Relief Fund. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the WXPN Music Community Relief Fund has received its first donation of $25,000. This initial gift of $25,000 will be used in partnership with Philly Music Fest to directly benefit 100 local artists and music industry workers, who have lost income due to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis, by providing individuals with $250 micro-grants to meet their immediate financial needs.
To continue to grow the WXPN Music Community Relief Fund, we will raise additional funds from our members between now and June 30th to address other critical needs of the local music community. As this crisis is uncertain and unfolding, WXPN will continue to access its impact on the local music community, and quickly respond to new and more urgent needs as they arise. More information on the WXPN Music Community Relief Fund plans and impact will be shared with donors on an ongoing basis.
Thank you for supporting your home for music discovery, WXPN, and for being a caring member of the local music community!
