Peter Bjorn and John - Gimme Some - Almost Gold/Startime

On their new album Gimme Some, the Swedish trio Peter Bjorn and John waste little time reassuming their role as great pop songwriters. From top to bottom their new collection is near flawless in its ability to capitalize on pop sensibilities. From infectious hooks to energized drums and catchy guitar riffs, Gimme Some feels effortless in its power pop ambition and on the whole, simply stated a lot of fun.

Up until now the trio had worked independent of producers, sustaining a DIY approach in the studio. Yet on Gimme Some, Peter Bjorn and John invoked the help of Per Sunding, a producer, musician and beloved fellow Swede whose credits include playing with the band Eggstone (a major PB&J influence) and producing acts like The Cardigans. The collaboration is well-timed. While to this point, PB&J have never really lacked enthusiasm on their albums, Gimme Some is their best attempt at transferring that live on-stage energy to the studio. It’s hard to resist the unrefined, punky little rockers like “Breaker, Breaker” and “Black Book”. The most ‘pop’ moments like “Dig A Little Deeper” and “Second Chance” harness such charming personality. And this is where PB&J really do succeed, thankfully, at turning the ‘pop’ label into a positive thing again.

Throughout their careers, and believe it or not Gimme Some is PB&J’s sixth album, the band has never been afraid to expand musically. From solo projects to producing all three members stretch their creative desires, but this band is nothing short of brilliant when it comes to writing bouncy, energetic melodies. And if the cover art is any indication, Gimme Some is deserving of three ‘thumbs up’!
