The results were her Mercury award winning debut album, Trailer Park, and collaborations throughout the 90’s with the likes of the Chemical Brothers and Andrew Weatherall. Her music was widely praised and referred to as “folktronica,” a blend of folk and electronic music. After three more critically praised albums, six years ago Beth Orton dropped out of the music business. She has since had two children and gotten married.
She met the late Bert Jansch and his wife in 2004 and began guitar lessons with the legendary folk musician. The title of her latest release, Sugaring Season, refers to the time of year when the sap rises and the Maples are tapped for syrup. The album is understated and far removed from Orton’s electronic roots. The tone is more confident and intimate showcasing her husky, expressive voice. Sugaring Season was released October 2, 2012.
Hear Beth Orton's live performance, with tunes from her new CD, and her conversation with WXPN’s Michaela Majoun about the making of Sugaring Season.
