Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang

Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang Ahmed Janka Nabay was one of the first musicians to take 500-year-old bubu music outside of his homeland of Sierra-Leone, where he had been a rock star. Nabay was forced to flee the country in the midst of the Sierra-Leonean Civil War,
and eventually wound up in Philadelphia in 2003. Nine years later, Nabay's band has released its debut record En Yay Sah, which blends bubu and electronic-dance elements. The album presents Nabay's cultural heritage with his urgent vocals in four languages and the group's infectious percussive rhythms. Hear Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang talk about the making of the album and perform tracks from their debut on this edition of World Cafe.
