Heavily inspired by the culture surrounding Jamaican music both old and new, the group is deeply rooted in soul music. The Lions’ sound has a rough edge like that of Soul Syndicate, Roots Radics, The Upsetters, and The Rockers Band. Members Deston Berry, Alex Désert , and Malik Moore carry the lead vocals, emphasized by the DJ stylings of Black Shakespeare. Guitarist Dan Ubick and bassist Dave Wilder also make up the group, along with a mix of musicians who have played with Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, Raphael Saadiq, and the Black Eyed Peas.
The Lions have been praised consistently for their global, urban, and funky sound, blending eclectic styles of music in a way that is always fresh and exciting. The band’s newest album,
This Generation, is no exception to such praise. The album, set for release on February 26, features special members Blake Colie (percussion), Steve Kaye (mixmaster), Dan Hastie (keyboard), James King (saxophone), Davey Chegwidden (percussion), Eddie Felix (saxophone and vocals), and David Ralicke (trombone). With talent and experience in every area, The Lions have a powerhouse foundation in store for what arguably could be one of the best reggae albums of this year.
