The blues-rocker Harper has to be called a veteran now but Charlie has a few more years on him. "This interview is remarkable for the heartfelt way Ben expresses his love for Charlie as a person, not just a musician." ~ David Dye
Background:
With the movement of blues back into the musical mainstream, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite are right where they want to be. The two released their collaborative album, Get Up!, this past January. And, boy can they make music together. Two-time Grammy Award winner, Ben Harper has made 10 studio albums over the course of his musical career. His most recent release, Give Till It’s Gone, came out in 2011.
Charlie Musselwhite, a harmonica extraordinaire, is noted for being one of the few non-black bluesmen to gain exposure during the 1960s. He has released 26 studio albums, his most recent being The Well back in 2010. That same year, Musselwhite was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
Get Up!, an XPN Featured Album of the Week, is the result of a project over 15 years in the making between Musselwhite and Harper. The two were encouraged to collaborate after recording the song “Burnin’ Hell” together in '97 and this new album reflects the musical chemistry that developed over the years, all wrapped up in a pulsating groove and poignant instrumentals. It's blend of modernity and classic blues make it a truly enjoyable listen.
This session originally aired on March 8, 2013.
