The two-time Grammy winner began her career with the M-base collective but branched into the solo world with eventual success. Jazz soon became the strongest aspect of Wilson's eclectic palette: two of her Jazz albums, Blue Skies (1988) and New Moon Daughter (1996), topped the US Jazz charts. At 56, Wilson is far from over the hill: her 2008 Jazz album, Loverly, garnered her a Grammy, and for over two years fans had been anxiously awaiting her newest release, Another Country.
Another Country is a step in a bold new direction. While Cassandra Wilson remains true to her talent for Jazz, she (and co-producer/electric guitarist Fabrizio Sotti) incorporate blues, soul, pop, samba and even some flamenco into an ambitious work tailor-made for Wilson's still-magnificent vocal presence. Wilson is the star of the album, shining amongst electric guitar, bass, accordion, and various Latin percussion. Another Country is, as the title suggests, an international affair: Wilson and Sotti divided the recording the album between New York, New Orleans, and Florence. Another Country was released in June by E1 Music.
