Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson might be best well known as the writer of the 1979 hit Is She Really Going Out With Him? Jackson – born in Staffordshire, England – has had 5 Grammy nominations over a long and illustrious career in music spanning over forty years. Jackson’s music has ranged from light pop-rock to jazzier numbers and even classical influences that characterize his more recent work.

Jackson is noted for his skillful arrangements; he won a scholarship to study musical composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Jackson is also an author. A Cure for Gravity was first published in 1999 and is a self described “book about music thinly disguised as a memoir”.

Jackson’s latest release is called The Duke, and was released on June 26th. The album is a wild re-imagining of Duke Ellington’s greatest hits. Jackson’s vocals are matched with Iggy Pop’s on It Don’t Mean a Thing, and with Sharon Jones on I Ain’t Got Nothing but the Blues. On today’s episode of World Cafe, Jackson explains some of the rules that he set for himself – the album features absolutely zero horns – and how those rules helped unlock his creative process on this tribute album. Jackson is promoting the new album with a new and large band, called the Bigger Band. He will tour with them starting in the middle of September in the United States, and then will play Europe in mid-October for another busy month.
