M. Ward

In the ever-blossoming revolution of indie-folk, one can become overwhelmed by the sameness of it all. Not so with the music of Portland artist M. Ward.

His is not the stuff of sad college cafés nor is it the glib reproduction of some attic-bound vinyl. In his adventures in Americana M. Ward reaches into the past and pulls it through to the future, roots influences twisting and changing into something new yet familiar.

He’s dabbled with the vintage sounds of She and Him with Zooey Deschanel, and has joined forces with Conor Oberst and Jim James in the supergroup Monsters of Folk. But in April M. Ward released A Wasteland Companion, a solo album that put his gentle voice and soft guitar at the forefront. He recorded the album in eight different studios and with contributions from eighteen different artists, yet his own sound holds strong.

In this World Cafe session, M. Ward performs selections from his latest album at World Café Live in Philadelphia.
