The communal folk sound made its break in 2009 with the heart-pounding, foot-stomping single “Home.” Popping with bright-eyed sentiment, the song includes a back-and-forth between front man Alex Ebert and his long-time friend, past lover, and current bandmate Jade Castrinos; the emotions that bleed forth from behind their voices infused the entire album with an impossible power. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros became a worldwide sensation quickly, and with a free spirit and freewheeling instrumentation, they seem on track to maintain the love they have found.
On May 29, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros released their sophomore album, Here, a familiarly mesmerizing work that maintains the emotional pull which first brought them to prominence. In this session, Alex Ebert discusses the new album and the character of Edward Sharpe, a superhero he invented as a child and is seeking again to become, and play for us live.
