Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, of Dejean's Young Olympia Brass Band, borrowed from the brass band tradition and the format of the marching band. They gathered jazz musicians from around New Orleans to create something based in soul and specific performance styles, but with the propensity to evolve. The result rebels against the rules of soul while paying homage the genre.
Incorporating hip-hop into brass band music set the group apart early on. As they composed more genre-defying music and recorded unpredictable covers, including their famous cover of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," the group's reputation spread beyond New Orleans. Soon, they were playing national tours with the likes of Arcade Fire, The Roots, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and James Brown. It wasn't long before the Soul Rebels were playing international festivals. With a new album out, "Unlock Your Mind," the Soul Rebels continue to push the boundaries of brass and jazz.
