Novalima

On their fourth album, "Karimba", Novalima continues to make music that is at once deeply traditional and also electronic and sultry.

Novalima is the project of Ramón Perez Prieto, Grimaldo Del Solar, Rafael Morales, and Carlos Li Carrillo, four Peruvian musicians who grew up in Peru and became friends in high school.  It was only after they graduated school and scattered around the world that Novalima started.  Initially a thread of emails exchanging song ideas and samples between the friends, Novalima has grown to a nine-member band that is changing the way the world thinks about world music.

Novalima's sound has evovled over their four albums, from fusing a wide range of cultural influences to settling on "Karimba" for club-infused Afro-Peruvian genre-bending.  They continue to blend pop, rock, salsa, raggae and dance, but focus specifically on the Afro-Peruvian sound.  Lima, where the four founding members grew up, is on the coast of Peru, where the heaviest musical influences are African and Spanish.  These influences reflect in the new album, which draws its strength from both the urgency of traditional music and the rush of dance music.
