Ben Folds was interested in music from the start. Early in childhood, he was listening to Billy Joel and Elton John, learning them by ear and playing them on the used piano his father obtained for him. As bassist, piano, and drummer in various high school bands, released a bunch of EPs with one outfit called Majosha, ended up in Nashville as a session musician, and even attended a Miami university on music scholarship. This is one musician with no lack of material or drive, and by defining the '90s music scene for many a fan, he's become an international sensation. Ben Folds Five, his band self-described as "punk rock for sissies" charted in several countries, and no doubt helped him establish a very successful solo career.
Fold's recent release is compilation of unreleased tracks, demos, live recordings, and even some new material. "A Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective" comes at a time when Folds is very much in the public eye again as a celebrity judge on The Sing-Off. It's expansive, covering the whole of Folds' enviable career, from remastered hits to remixes--and it's got plenty of Folds' wry humor throughout, as well as plenty from Ben Folds Five.
