It all began as a series of demos with friends, and over the years it's included the influences, ideas, and contributions of many people, including Joseph Arthur, Prince protege Apollonia, and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees). The demos turned into a full-fledged band after a few years, and Dulli began to devote more and more time to the project. Finally, trading in the alternative rock of The Afghan Wigs for a more atmospheric, electronic brand of indie rock, Dulli and the Twilight Singers found instant acclaim.

On "Dynamite Steps", the fifth and latest release from the New Orleans' indie stars, the band delves into dark and brooding territory. With slightly off-key vocals that gently soar above the guitar, melancholic orchestration, and spurts of crunching guitar grooves, "Dynamite Steps" is certainly not a happy-go-lucky album. It is, however, one of the most genuinely mysterious and nocturnal albums to come out in a long time. Greg Dulli's brilliant wordplay only complements the music, offering existential lyricsm.  By exploring these darker depths of the human psyche, the Twilight Singers offer a fascinating glimpse into some of the more sinister sides of life with the blues and soul – one that may often go overlooked in today's music world, but one that is certainly worth exploring nonetheless.
