Lloyd Cole

Lloyd Cole Doug Seymour

On his most recent release "Broken Record", Lloyd Cole (formerly of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions) offers a healthy dose of gentle, country-soaked tunes.

With a backing band playing slide guitar, harmonica, upright bass, and banjo, Lloyd Cole gives listeners a refreshingly clever, complex lyrical output. Delivered in his smooth baritone voice, the songs on "Broken Record" shimmer with gorgeously restrained Americana. Showcasing the influences of Bob Dylan and Neil Young apparent throughout this album, Lloyd Cole has successfully fused his current American setting's pedigree with his own English roots.

A seasoned veteran to the music world, Cole has been recording since the mid '80s. He's helped create 21 albums, both solo and with his original backing band, the Commotions. "Broken Record" reveals a capable craftsman who, after all these years, still sounds like he is having fun playing music--especially with friends. Perhaps this is because the album was marks a bit of a departure from the solo creation process, since Cole recorded with a group of long-time friends and partners. The recording of "Broken Record" was also strictly financed by fans with advance purchases, making it an album with many influences. Such progressive thinking is a staple of Lloyd Cole and shows that he is indeed a freethinking man. Upcoming musicians should take note of Cole, both for his sweeping sound and his unique approach to recording. After all, if he is still finding critical and commercial success after all these years, Lloyd Cole must be doing something right.
