Alexander Ebert

Alexander Ebert Adarsha Benjamin

Famous for his front man ventures with the wildly different Ima Robot (dancey punk rock) and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes (communal folk of the best kind), Alexander Ebert is now releasing a solo debut.

This singer-songwriter from L.A. has a diverse musical background--his father played for him country classics like Patsy Cline, Willy Nelson, and Johnny Cash. The young Ebert was also enthralled by hip hop, and intended to become a rapper early in his career. He's brought his diverse background to the fore in his latest release.

Appropriately titled "Alexander", this new solo album of Ebert's has him playing every instrument and singing every note. This latest release echoes some of his musical background--some parts more faintly than others, but the overall effect is folksy, a stripped down combination of many of his influences. Perhaps more in the direction of neo-folk sensation Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros than dance-punk outfit Ima Robot, "Alexander" will undoubtedly appeal to fans of either band. Of course, the album has its own very distinct style. "Alexander" maintains a very playful, anything-goes quality, with Paul Simon and Mungo Jerry as cited influences. On lead single "Truth" Ebert even comes very close to rapping, with a hip-hop inspired cadence and masterful wordplay. Indeed, Ebert has no fear of genre-hopping, as he dabbles in folk, rock, and even Afropop with his undying enthusiasm. No matter what direction the album goes, Alexander Ebert's raspy voice is always there to carry each song, allowing the album to really soar. "Alexander" has a very organic, genuine feel, which shines through on every listen, and the same has been said of Ebert's famed live performances.
