TV on the Radio

Stemming from New York's pulsating underground music scene in 2001, TV on the Radio has grown into genre fusing, rock masterminds.

Combining everything from jazz, alternative rock, soul, hip-hop and electro-pop, they've managed to produce a critically acclaimed style of their own. In 2008, that style took them to a breakthrough with "Dear Science", which was named the 2008 album of the year by Rolling Stone, MTV, and Pitchfork. This was the culmination of years of non-stop touring and writing/recording; after playing numerous sold-out shows and spreading their versatile sound, TVOTR decided to take a one-year break. They've now returned with another offering, and true to form, it's like nothing they've made before.

TVOTR came back this April with "Nine Types of Light", their fifth album to date and yet again, another bold step in a new stylistic direction for the group. Coming off of the funky percussion and new wave synth of their previous release, TVOTR have instilled a comparative calm into "Nine Types of Light". Critics and fans alike have begun to call it a lover's album--there are still moments of furious blues rock, but "Nine Types of Light" has rich waves of quiet beats and perhaps even acquiescent melodies. There's even a banjo! While their sound may have shifted towards an intense yet satisfying look at middle-age, TVOTR remain completely honest with themselves and their fans, maintaining their spot as one of Brooklyn's most innovative bands. With the tragic death of percussionist Gerard Smith from lung cancer just days after their latest release, the emotional power of "Nine Types of Light" could even be construed as a homage.
