Latin Roots Celebrates Cuba’s Los Van Van As Their Founder Juan Formell Passes

Our Latin Roots today is a timely and poignant one. Rachel Faro joins us to talk about one of her heroes, Juan Formell, the bass player and leader of the Cuban band Los Van Van. Formell passed away on May 1 at the age of 71.

He led the formidable band for almost 45 years and was one of its remaining original members. Los Van Van always got the people moving and Rachel praises their ability to reflect the changes in Cuban society over the years while keeping things moving. Their influence spread well beyond Havana. The band endures now lead by Juan Formell’s son Samuel. Rachel has provided us with a Spotify playlist for your own Los Van Van dance party. Enjoy.
