We went to Iceland under the midnight sun and found pretty much what we were expecting. Of course our expectations were pretty high! We brought it all back for you and our Sense of Place Iceland. Spectacular scenery unlike anything else: huge waterfalls, bubbling geysers, volcanic fields in various stages of recovery. People who were proud, extremely helpful and funny. And music that was just as varied as we expected from the place that has given us both Bjork and Sigur Rós. We brought back sessions with Of Monsters and Men, Sin Fang – an incredibly inventive artist who has been called the Icelandic Beck, the classical-folk hybrid of Árstíðir, and the broad cinematic sweep of Ólafur Arnalds. We talked with Óli P the program director of Rás 2 the Icelandic equivalent of The World Cafe to find out who is new. And we went to the record store 12 Tónar where the clerk gave us a High Fidelity style Top 5 all-time Icelandic artists. If you ever wondered what became of “Siggy,” the drummer for The Sugarcubes, we’ll let you know. We also have Ásgeir for a Vintage Cafe. Ironically he was playing here when we visited! Also Bjork and Sigur Rós from the archives. Check out the videos and John Vettese’s spectacular photography.
