To understand our guests today, the Montreal based band Ought and their debut album More Than Any Other Day it helps to know a little about what was going on in the Canadian city when the four members got together at McGill University in 2012. When the Quebec government threatened to raise the tuition on the province’s universities that year it set off a massive protest and strike, the Printemps d'Erable Quebec . That translates as “Quebec Maple Spring” and not so coincidentally sounds a liittle like “Arab Spring” the uprisings in the Middle East. Ought’s music couldn’t help but be influenced by events going on around them. The band members are not Canadians but are expats from America and Australia. Their angular music has apparent and not so apparent political overtones and, as you will hear, is wonderfully fresh.
