The British Invasion band Kinks put out so much music on Pye Records between 1964 and 1971 that their brand new Anthology of the period takes 5 discs just to scratch the surface. And our conversation with head Kink Ray Davies will take two days. Today we start with their first hit “You Really Got Me.” The band was just a year old when they released the song that seemed to define what rock and roll, and even heavy metal would sound like - Ray’s writing and his brother Dave’s immaculate riff. We’ll talk about how being at the end of their rope made them take control to get the sound they wanted. One other thing we’ll find out both today and tomorrow is that as a songwriter Davies could not stay in one place. Explore classics from one of rock’s most-beloved bands with Ray Davies. Long Live The Kinks!
