Our in studio session today is with Rhiannon Giddens. Many people know her as the lead voice in The Carolina Chocolate Drops whose album Genuine Negro Jig was a Grammy winner in 2010. That album was an introduction to the way makes a song her own; in this case Blu Cantrell's “Hit Em Up Style.” Rhiannon has done more solo work – she was a show stopper in the film of the Another Day, Another Time, concert singing a Gaelic song - and is one of the members of The New Basement Tapes folk supergroup. Now comes her first solo album Tomorrow Is My Turn. Rhiannon has found a way to put her stamp on a wide variety of songs from iconic female artists like Patsy Cline, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Nina Simone and others. T-Bone Burnett produced. Rhiannon talks about her musical path, her decisions and plays live with her band.
