Hiss Golden Messenger

A Powerful Full Band Performance From Hiss Golden Messenger

For our Vintage Cafe this week we revisit a session from just last year with the North Carolina based band Hiss Golden Messenger. This was a particularly powerful band performance and you can see a video of the song “Southern Grammar” at our YouTube channel YouTube.com/worldcafe. Singer/songwriter M.C. Taylor, working with engineer/instrumentalist Scott Hirsch, has been recording as Hiss Golden Messenger since 2008. It was in the kitchen of his rural North Carolina home creating 2010's Bad Debt that Taylor completely figured out his music. And then all copies of that album were lost in a warehouse fire at his London label. Those songs would come out on later Hiss Golden Messenger albums. Taylor moved to North Carolina to go to school to study folklore and his academic life and his musical life have definitely intertwined. The 2014 album Lateness of Dancers was the band's first for Merge records.
