Cold Specks

courtesy of Autumn de Wilde Cold Specks is the stage name of 23-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Al Spx. The London-based artist started Cold Specks as a small acoustic solo project for Spx to showcase her soulful voice and thoughtful lyrics, influenced by southern gospel music and soul musicians, such as James Carr.
When producer Jim Anderson heard her music in 2010, he approached her to produce a full-length Cold Specks album. Stemming from this connection, Cold Specks’ debut single, “Holland,” was released in 2011 to significant critical acclaim and earned her a record contract with Mute Records. Working with Jim Anderson, Spx experienced a few bumps along the road, but Cold Specks finally released her first full length album, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion, this May. In this World Cafe interview, WXPN’s David Dye talks to Cold Specks’ Al Spx about the challenges she faced recording her first album, overcoming stage fright, and transitioning from a solo acoustic artist to a full 6-piece band.
