Valerie June Artist To Watch - July 2013

Self-taught musician, singer and songwriter from small-town Humboldt, Tennessee, Valerie June is a force to be reckoned with.

She creates a stunningly emotive concoction of blues, folk, gospel, soul, Appalachian, and bluegrass that channels the classic American roots music of days gone by. With so many traditional influences mixed with the modern flair of her young age, and with the aid of album producers Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Kevin Augunas of Florence & The Machine, Valerie June’s debut album Pushin’ Against A Stone makes for an instant classic. The album is out on August 13 and she is slated to play the Tin Angel on August 15 in Philly.

“We caught sight of Valerie June before she got signed and marveled at her thoroughly modern mix of all kinds of roots music. Blues, gospel, folk, R&B, bluegrass, Southern soul – June makes the most of the niches, highlighted by her confident voice. June’s new album Pushin’ Against A Stone sits on a continuum of recent records like the Alabama Shakes and Laura Mvula in that it draws on the past to create something new, fresh and exciting.” ~Bruce Warren
