Danny Michel and The Garifuna Collective

Veteran Canadian Songwriter Danny Michel In Winning Collaboration With Garifuna Collective

July 15, 2013 - Danny Michel is an under-the-radar Canadian songwriter with an already lengthy career. So why are we talking about him? Last year he travelled to Belize to record with The Garifuna Collective.

This is the same aggregation that worked with Andy Palacio on his Watina record, an album that many saw as instrumental in saving Garifuna culture. The Garifuna are descendants of slaves who settled along the Central American coast. Michel worked with these musicians and producer Ivan Duran on his album Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me. It is a perfect combination. Michel already has a voice reminiscent of Paul Simon and on this album has made his Rhythm of the Saints. Blackbirds is an effortless, comfortable, collaboration that has brought out some of Michel’s best writing yet.
