The Clash

October 25, 2013 - This week on Conversations from the World Cafe, the surviving members of The Clash join host David Dye in the studio. The Clash put out their self titled debut in 1977 and in a few short years earned the title “The Only Band That Matters” for their ambitious music, astute lyrics and take no prisoners attitude.
After their 5th album, 1982’s Combat Rock, the group began to disintegrate though. Drummer Topper Headon was asked to leave and guitar Mick Jones and vocalist Joe Strummer began to fight. The final Clash disc, 1985’s Cut the Crap, was largely the creation of Joe Strummer and a group of studio musicians; it was released to poor reviews. But the members began to make peace in the years that followed, and by the time of their 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame there were even rumors of a reunion. Joe Strummer died shortly before the induction, ending that possibility. Recently remaining members Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon came together to put out a 12 CD box set called Sound System. The trio will reflect on their work together and how the new release helped them become friends again. Plus, the Pet Shop Boys. Their last disc, 2012’s Elysium, was a quieter more introspective album, but with their new record Electric they have turned up the volume and increased the BPM to create a club masterpiece. The always humorous pair discuss giving their fans what they want and why being a fan of a music group is like following your favorite football team. That and more this week on Conversations from the World Cafe!
