, which is quite a descriptive name given the duo's tendency for downtempo, dreamy, and sci-fi inspired tunes. The two got together in the mid-90s, and since then they've crafted a reputation for a special brand of ambient. With influences across the board--'70s synth, Pink Floyd, Serge Gainsbourg, and The Carpenters, to name a few--AIR has been able to sell over 1 million albums worldwide. They've worked extensively with film director Sofia Coppola, contributing to the soundtracks of The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. As AIR approaches two decades of existence, the duo isn't slowing down. Their latest project is also tied to a film, but they've made it wholly their own.
"Le Voyage Dans La Lune" (A Trip to the Moon) is the seventh full-length release from AIR. Dunckel and Godin were asked to write a soundtrack for a re-release of the classic 1902 Georges Méliès film of the same name. After locking themselves in the studio to flesh out some quaint yet adventurous tunes, they were so taken by the project that they decided to expand it to a full album. The result is a futuristic, instrumental, and endlessly captivating. Featuring Au Revoir Simone and Victoria Legrand (Beach House), "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" explores a fascination with the final frontier, but never in a rigid manner. As Godin puts it, "'A Trip to the Moon' is undoubtedly more organic than most of our past projects. We wanted it to sound 'handmade,' knocked together’, a bit like Méliès' special effects. Everything is played live...like Méliès' film, our soundtrack is nourished by living art."
