The Winterpills
at World Cafe Live
The Winterpills join us for the Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live. A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Hailing from Massachusetts, the indie-pop quintet Winterpills was formed in the early 2000s by Brian Akey (bass), Dennis Crommett (guitar, vocals), Dave Hower (percussion), Philip Price (vocals, guitar, keyboard), and Flora Reed (vocals, keyboard). The band cites Innocence Mission, Elliot Smith, and Bjork as some of their major influences. Frontman Price uses his '90s powerpop and solo acoustic backgrounds to write songs reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Young. Winterpills' emotive lyrics and sublime male/female harmonies combined with their diverse instrumentation has created music that is "dusky, quietly ripping folk-pop that sound[s] at once intimate and universal", as put in the Boston Globe.
Their self-titled debut was released in 2005, and critics were quick to heap on the praise. According to David Dye, the album was "a disc of faultless, sparkling indie pop", and the alt-country magazine No Depression called it "alternately sad, cynical and deeply moving." Winterpills have since released two more albums. The latest of which, Central Chambers, was originally intended as an EP to follow up Winterpills' second album, but the project soon expanded into an LP and was released in mid-October of 2008 to more critical acclaim. Central Chambers keeps the band's intensive harmonies and powerful lyrics while exploring new sounds through different instrumentation and recording techniques.
