Luella and The Sun

Raw Gospel and Roots at The Heart of Nashville’s Luella and The Sun

April 8, 2013 - For our Sense of Place: Nashville week we went with the consensus pick of Luella and The Sun out of the many more than qualified Nashville bands we heard.

That’s the consensus of other bands like Moon Taxi, Grimeys Records’ Doyle Davis, and NPR’s Ann Powers who are all major fans of Luella and The Sun. It seems that Nashville has a female counterpart to Jack White in the rocking blues category. The band is the right combination of Nashville veterans John Radford, Joe McMahan, Adam Bednarik and Melissa Mathes who is Luella. Drawing from Blues and gospel in live performances Luella often begins things acapella bringing things to a ferocious frenzy even before her band mates kick in. Their recorded output is a "single" so far, with more to come.

Session Playlist:
Luella and The Sun / "Fly So Free"
Luella and The Sun / “Universe In My Heart”
