Midlake

January 31, 2014 - This week on Conversations from the World Cafe, Midlake share how they carried on after the departure of their lead singer Tim Smith. Midlake had built up quite a following with 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther and 2010’s The Courage of Others. And then in the middle of recording their new disc lead singer and primary songwriter Tim Smith decided to leave the band.
Back up singer Eric Pulido and the rest of the group were unsure what to do next, though they knew they didn’t want Midlake to end. So Pulido took the helm, completely redoing the album. The result, called Antiphon, is some of their best work yet. The band talk with the Cafe’s Michaela Majoun about the tumultuous period. And, Of Montreal. Leader Kevin Barnes discusses why the group’s new album Lousy with Sylvianbriar is such a departure from their past work and how the writing of poet Sylvia Plath figured into that change. That’s this week on Conversations from the World Cafe
