Benmont Tench has played piano, keys, and occasionally sang for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers since the band’s beginning in 1976. Even before that Tench worked with Petty- he quit school to join Mudcrutch, Petty’s pre-Heartbreakers band. In the 80s Tench also became a well respected session musician, playing with folks like Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, U2 and The Rolling Stones. This year he put out his first solo disc, You Should Be So Lucky. It contains 10 original songs from the Florida native. Tench talks about why, at this point in his career, he decided to do a solo debut, and explains how Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers taught him how to make music his profession. And, Travis. Chris Martin of Coldplay has called himself "a poor man's Fran Healy" and said that Travis "invented" Coldplay. Well, Travis certainly paved the way for their sound. After a five year hiatus, the band has returned with a brand new disc, Where You Stand.
