The Revelations featuring Tre' Williams join us for XPN Free at Noon at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
The Revelations' members, featuring singer Tre Williams, revive '60s and '70s soul, yet there's a modern quality to their sound that suggests they're not bound to the confines of a jukebox. Their debut record, Deep Soul, blends images of the bluesy South with the gritty streets of a bustling city into one contemporary view of life.
The raw-voiced Williams brings to mind a modern-day Otis Redding. With a background in church choirs and R&B, he's developed an impressive four-octave range that's lent itself to tracks by Nas and Petey Pablo. The sextet's mixture of soul, funk and hip-hop on Deep Soul creates a fusion of old standards with fresh ideas.

Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks join us for XPN Free at Noon at World Cafe Live.

So few truly original figures exist in pop music that Dan Hicks should be a national treasure.
- San Francisco Chronicle
Singer-songwriter Dan Hicks is truly an American original. Since the early '60s, Hicks has blended swing, jazz, folk and country to create the appealing sound he calls "Folk Jazz." At 66, Hicks is bringing back the Hot Licks on his upcoming album Tangles Tales. With the updated version of the female backup singers, the album is a swirling mix of swing, blues and folk-jazz. A rhythmically knee-shaking collection of originals and covers alike.
In addition to the XPN Free At Noon, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks play a full show at Sellersville Theater on Friday night April 10 at 8:30pm.

Raphael Saadiq joins us for the XPN Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Raphael Saadiq delivers some of the finest neo soul around on his new record, The Way I See It. Former lead vocalist of the New Jack Swing trio Tony! Toni! Tone!, Saadiq has produced for artists including John Legend and Joss Stone, and collaborated with the likes of Whitney Houston, D'Angelo, and The Roots. The Way I See It is standout within the recent '60s soul resurgence.
Since a young age Raphael Saadiq was musically inclined: playing the bass, singing in professional gospel groups, and performing onstage for his church and school. Steeped in a wide range of musical knowledge and experience with classical music, spirituals, and jazz, Saadiq is credited with leaving a remarkable old-school footprint in the musical world and often referred to as a leader of the neo-soul movement due to his 20 years of experience in the R&B scene. His latest release has a nostalgic, foot-tapping feel. Drawing inspiration from The Temptations and a trip to the Bahamas, Saadiq attributes the quintessentially retro feel of this latest effort to his long-time love for soul as well as his recent travels.
The Way I See It was produced in four months and hit the shelves mid-September, 2008.

Shemekia Copeland & Indigo Girls join us for the XPN Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Grammy Award winning rock duo Indigo Girls officialy began performing under the now famous moniker in 1985, signing their first record contract to Epic Records three years later. Now celebrating their 20 year career, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers remain as creative as ever. Though they are associated with a major label, they have always retained an independent feel with their warm and crisp acoustic guitars and intertwined melodic vocals. With an incredible career behind them, it is not surprising that a great deal of excitement is building up in anticipation of Poseidon And the Bitter Bug, expected to be released at the end of March.
Recorded in a short three-week period in Atlanta, the album intends to focus less on perfection and more on the rich mixture of textures explored. According to Ray "... it was very much an in-the-moment recording... we had to trust our instincts." Following the successful release of their 2006 album Despite Our Differences, the girls have a lot to live up to; however, circulating previews are already labeling the album as one of their best. Though they retain the very qualities of folk and Americana music that fans adore, they have embarked on new musical explorations by incorporating styles such as R&B. The album will also feature acoustic versions of all the songs in order to give fans an idea of how they sound without a back-up band.

The daughter of blues guitarist/singer Johnny Copeland, the young Shemekia Copeland was greatly influenced by her father's work. As a child she would often accompany him on tours, making her own mark in the blues circuit. The unfortunate turn in her father's health pushed her to embrace her incredible vocal talent and share it with the rest of the world. In 1998, the 19-year-old established herself as raving new artist with the release of her debut album Turn the Heat Up! The soulful intensity of the album was met with a great deal of enthusiasm and landed her several features in motion pictures. Her style, which integrates elements of blues, soul, funk and jazz, is rich and mind-blowingly powerful. Though she is not yet 30, the passionate singer has already won several blues awards, recieved a Grammy nomination, and opened for top acts such as the Rolling Stones, B.B. King, and Taj Mahal.
The incredible list of accomplishments hasn't quite struck the young artist. In fact, the humble Copeland continually strives to strengthen her singing and grow and an individual. Her fifth album, Never Going Back, is a powerful and soul-drenched compilation of tracks. While she remains true to her blues roots, she takes a step further in her career by experimenting with new styles of music and new approaches to singing (including a silky cover of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow"). She is not afraid to step outside of her comfort zone; and as the album demonstrates, she does so with both grace and unbelievable power.
Prepare to be blown away by the future Queen of Blues, this Friday at noon!

Bell X1 joins us for the XPN Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
The Irish pop rock band Bell X1, originally known as Juniper, have experienced a multitude of changes on the path to the successful spot they currently hold. Though they were lead by popular vocalist Damien Rice, Rice ended up leaving Jupiter and was replaced by drummer Paul Noonan. Soon after the group changed their name and became Bell X1. Of their three studio-recorded albums, Flock, released February of 2008, has proven to be the most successful. The album reached #1 in Ireland and gained a huge following throughout the U.K.
Bell X1 most recently signed to Yep Roc Records in what is now a successful attempt to break into the U.S. indie rock scene. The band's pop indie sound, with their sweet and never overworked tunes, has carried them around the U.S. on various tours, making appearances on shows such as "Late Night with Conan O'Brien". They've also managed to have their songs featured on a number of television shows, including "Eve, the Apple of My Eye," which was used for the popular TV show "The O.C."
They will be touring the states in early March to support of their fourth studio album Blue Lights On the Runway.

Jason Isbell joins us for the XPN Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
After a successful six years of recording and performing, former Drive-By Tuckers guitarist and
songwriter, Jason Isbell, left the rock band to explore his own musical idenity. He released his first solo album "Sirens of the Ditch" in 2007, revealing a softer southern blues mixed with southern and country-rock. Isbell's transformation from guitarist to lone frontman shines on his new album Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.
The album is a
warm and gritty country-soul album that not only displays confident writing, but also years of hard work and collaboration. The group swings between heavy percussion, vintage soul and country with ease. In support of this month's release, the group has added a new batch of tour dates for March and

Carrie Rodriguez joins us for the Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
A classically trained violinist, smoky singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez incorporates virtuoso fiddle skills into an Americana sound. With a country pop sound firmly set in a folk background, Rodriguez' music is traditional and exploratory at the same time.
Born in Austin to a musically inclined family, Rodriguez attended Berklee College of Music where she was introduced to the fiddle. Discovered by songwriter Chip Taylor at a music festival in her hometown a few years later, she was soon collaborating with him in recordings and performances. After several studio LPs with Taylor, Rodriguez released her solo debut in 2006, Seven Angels on a Bicycle, co-written with Taylor. The debut was lauded by critics for its seamless blend of country, pop, and even an unexpected pinch of jazz. Now, two years later, Rodriguez has released a second solo album, She Ain't Me, in which she emphasizes her own songwriting over the past collaboration with Taylor. She says, "Because I took some chances, wrote with some new people and actually co-wrote most of the songs on the album, it's very different." She Ain't Me is more individualistic and has less of a studio polish than any of Rodriguez' previous releases. It covers more intimate topics - love, politics, and a search for identity - all underscored by Rodriguez' gritty fiddle playing.

Dr. Dog joins us for the Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live.
A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Filtering classic rock and pop hooks through a willfully lo-fi slacker aesthetic ala Pavement or Guided by Voices, Philadelphia's Dr. Dog is able to sound both timeless and immediate as only the best music can.
Formed in 1999 as a recording project between two members of the more traditional indie-rock band Raccoon, Dr. Dog cemented itself into a real band when Raccoon ended in the early 2000's. Their first two records, 2001's Psychedelic Swamp and 2002's Toothbrush, were both self-released but failed to make an impact outside of the Philadelphia area. However, the band's fortunes changed when My Morning Jacket's Jim James handpicked Dr. Dog to open for their 2004 tour. They were subsequently picked up by indie label Park the Van for their 2005's Easy Beat, which was met with wide critical praise for its fascinating combination of psychedelic pop hooks and Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies.
Dr. Dog's recent release, Fate, showcases the bands' psychedelic, "blast from the past" bent towards nostalgia. Horns and honkytonks help celebrate an Americana ambiance, which is noticeably more refined. While they have certainly matured, it would be a mistake to confuse this growth for overbearing seriousness. Thematically cohesive, yet void of repetition, the lyrics are sophisticated and fun. Continuing dabble in catchy, feel good tunes, Dr. Dog proves that it was not "fate," but rather, talent that created this masterpiece.
They will continue to tour extensively around the U.S. well into the spring, but be sure to catch them at this Friday's Free at Noon!

Annuals join us for the Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live. A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Intricate, melodic, and vivid: the sound of North Carolina's Annuals is the epitome of sunny indie-pop. Their thoughtful harmonies, anthemic orchestration and percussion, and bright electronica has earned them rave reviews since their indie-label debut in 2006, the critic's darling Be He Me.
Annuals was spearheaded in Raleigh during 2003 by Adam Baker as a side-project of still-strong band Sunfold. The current six members of Annuals - Adam Baker (songwriter/vocals), Kenny Florence (lead guitar/backing vocals), Mike Robinson (bass/backing vocals), Anna Spence (keyboard/piano/vocals), Zak Oden (drums/guitar), and Donzel Radford (drums/percussion)- were all surprisingly young when the band released their first effort. When Be He Me came out and catapulted them onto indie-pop watch lists, their average age was 19. Since that time, the band's sound has matured but kept its youthful intensity. Citing influences such as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, and Paul Simon, the Annuals' style draws references to contemporary bands Fleet Foxes, New Pornographers, Bloc Party, and Arcade Fire.
The sextet's latest effort, appropriately named Such Fun, stays true to Annual's tagged sound yet still displays enough variety to keep old fans while capturing the new. As stated in Billboard's review of the album, "[Such Fun] is as rich and diverse as 2006's Be He Me, unfolding with layers of piano and string flourishes, crunching guitar jams and vibrant pop melodies."

Devotchka joins us for the Free at Noon show at World Cafe Live. A co-production of WXPN and NPR Music.
Using an eclectic blend of styles (from Slavic to American punk), the Denver-based quartet Devotchka has recently been gathering more and more recognition, especially for the use of their music in the film industry. Their work has been featured in several indie films and was notably nominated for an Academy Award in the 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine.
Devotchka is comprised of Nick Urata (vocals, theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion, and piano), Jeanie Schroder (vocals, sousaphone, and double bass), and Shawn King (percussion and trumpet). Their range of instruments and influences have allowed them to create a culturally blended yet unique sound. Full of orchestral melodies, energetic pop, and folksy background, Devotchka's style has been called souped-up polka rock--almost circus-y in its diversity, but maturing and connective all the while.
The quartet started as a backing band for burlesque shows, then self-released some albums that they promoted on cross-country tours. Their fifth official LP, A Mad & Faithful Telling, hit the shelves in March of 2008. Critics are hailing it as their most developed album yet for its lush, elegant, and passionate feel. Devotchka took off on a world tour to support A Mad & Faithful Telling, and they are now back in the States, performing across the continent.
